Seven members of the Duncan Stingrays knew exactly what they had to do in the Richmond Fastswim Classic.

As the name implies, the field is full of fast swimmers and nothing short of quick times would suffice to achieve medals.

Cowichan Secondary had perhaps its best-ever individual swimming performances at the provincial high school championships in Richmond last month, with Tamara Garriock qualifying for the British Columbia finals in each of her four events and Veronica Reid doing so in two races.

Christine Ridenour is thankful for all the support she’s received in her sporting endeavours from others.

That’s what prompted the Cowichan Secondary School Grade 11 triathlon phenom to organize the Fast Food run Sunday at McAdam Park, with proceeds going to the Cowichan Valley Basket Society.

The numbers have been tabulated following the Duncan Stingrays’ recent swim meet at the Cowichan Aquatic Centre and the news is all good.

Stingrays’ coach Leanne Sirup said the team average from the 52 Duncan swimmers who participated was 83 per cent best times.

It was a day of firsts for the Duncan Stingrays on Nov. 15 when the team hosted a regional meet at the Cowichan Aquatic Centre.

Not only was it the first club competition at the Cowichan Valley's new pool, it also marked the first meet for several Stingrays swimmers.

Georrence Atsma, Amber Bell, Andrew Bernatchez, Caden Bruneau, Jocelyn Doskotch, Mariah Fontana, Fraser Fulton, Hunter Laughland, Jordana Lee, Elizabeth Morgan, Montana Prystupa and April Schlienz all had breakthrough performances in their competition debut.

The tables are set for the first Fast Food run in the valley.

No, cheeseburgers and french fries aren’t on the menu. Fast refers to the expected speed of participants, who will donate non-perishable food items to the Cowichan Valley Basket Society.

The run takes place Sunday (Nov. 30) at McAdam Park. The two-kilometer run and walk starts at 11 a.m. and the five km at 11:30.

The Cowichan Aquatic Centre overflowed with enthusiasm when the Duncan Stingrays hosted their first Island regional meet there Saturday.

The host ‘Rays had 52 swimmers in the pool. They were joined by members of the Comox Valley and Greater Victoria Aquatic Clubs and a contingent of 60 from Pacific Coast Swimming.

Desirae Ridenour and Cecilia Johnson are getting quicker practically every time they enter the pool.

Ridenour, a Grade 4 Bench Elementary student who turns nine Dec. 15, recently shaved 39.6 seconds off her best 100-metre individual medley time.

Johnson, a Grade 5 Duncan Elementary student, knocked 21.6 seconds off her best in the 100 I.M. in advance of her 10th birthday Sunday.

Fast times at the first meet for Stingrays

Leanne Sirup has the Duncan Stingrays in top-notch form already.

The swim team coach was excited with the performance of young club members during the first regional meet of the season in the Comox Valley.

Eighteen Stingrays were in attendance.

“Out of those 18, 11 of them got 100 per cent personal best times,’’ Sirup said.

Those results were phenomenal, “considering it was only three weeks into the season,’’ she added.

Strong Start to Season for Stingrays Swimmers

The Duncan Stingrays opened their 2008/09 season with a splash last weekend, stunning the competition and picking up where they left off at the end of last season.

Of the 18 swimmers that attended the regional meet in Comox, 11 came away with 100 percent best times.

Hayward nabs Premier's Award

A talented athlete who has turned in remarkable performances in several sports over the past season, Duncan's Katelyn Hayward will be recognized for her efforts by none other than the Premier of British Columbia.

The 13-year-old swimmer and runner will receive an Award of Excellence this Sunday at the BC Athletics Awards Banquet in Vancouver after being selected as one of the top young athletes in B.C.

Stingrays swimmers getting set for a competitive season of high profile meets

The Duncan Stingrays swim team has a busy start to the competitive season coming up in November.

Team members have the Island Pacific Cup on the agenda Nov 7 - 9.  The group then splits for the Nov 15 weekend, with some swimmers in Comox and others in a Duncan meet at the same time.

Stingrays set for another strong year

With a new pool ready to swim in and another successful year in the books, the Duncan Stingrays Swim Club is anxious for the new year to begin.

"We're completely excited," said Stingrays coach Leanne Sirup.

Between the new Cowichan Aquatic Centre, which is scheduled to open later this month, and the fascinating performances at the Summer Olympics, interest in the club has also increased, said the coach.
