The Duncan Stingrays use a
progressive age group program designed to develop the child
physically, mentally and emotionally in a systematic fashion.
A well defined, long-term approach of gradually increasing degrees
of commitment is essential to reach peak performance levels during
a swimmer’s physiological prime. The emphasis in all stages,
but especially during the early stages, of participation must be
placed on developing technical skills. Our program follows
the Long Term Athlete Development model (description to follow
training groups).
We do not promote the
idea of ‘specializing’ in a particular strokes or distances. All
swimmers going through the program are swimmers – not backstrokers,
butterflyers, or sprinters. We will train swimmers to be able
to compete in the 400m IM, 200 of stroke and the distance
freestyles. Once an athlete conquers those events –
everything else is more easily conquered.
Swimmer's
Training Responsibilities
As a
swimmer’s level of swimming ability increases, so does his/her
responsibility.
The
program is designed to encourage all swim swimmers to be Provincial/National
swimming bound. As swimmers improve, there is a deep
commitment that requires great effort on all parts. A swimmer
has responsibilities to the team, the coach, his/her parents, and
most importantly to themselves. Swimmers need to prepare
themselves for a 100% effort each time they come to practice –
which encompasses their focus, their attention, and their physical
effort.
Swimmers are required
to bring specified training accessories – goggles, fins, water
bottles, etc. – to workouts. It is the swimmer’s
responsibility to make sure these items are properly adjusted and
that spares are readily available.

Swimmers are
responsible for bringing appropriate dryland apparel, including
runners, sweat pants or shorts, Stingrays t-shirt, sweatshirt or
jacket, and water bottles. Absolutely NO jeans and NO
sandals.
